But would a "cure" really normalize the teenager? Sydney artist Mike Parr uses a strong cathartic presence throughout his works which is a direct result of his independent work strategies. The basis of frustration for this piece came from a personal experience. Parr broke his collarbone losing all use of his drawing hand, this started as an emotional experience for him which eventually resulted in him learning to use his other hand. This journey of self-discovery later developed in to an instinctive drawing style that made it capable for him to draw using both his hands simultaneously. The drawing is conflicted in the fact the pain before the injury looks more troublesome than the pain after, suggesting the audience contemplates the troubles in their own life.


Pain is a harsh reminder that one is still very much connected to the collective rapture called existence; a belonging which often resonates radially as it does its utmost best to alert one that to continue with the chosen action, to continue along the chosen path, is not without harsh yet definitely quantifiable inauspicious consequences. It was this pervasion of ecstasy, one which she had rejected sometime in the past, that finally forced her to open her eyes, and which saved her from permanent oblivion of her last, true self. Equus, a play by Peter Shaffer, written in was performed on Forbes Center Stage by James Madison University students.


It introduced actors- Chris Consaul, Noah Heie- allowing them to perform complex roles full of emotion. Alan is currently being treated by a Martin Dysart, his psychiatrist, for blinding six horses. His psychiatrist tries to get Alan to explain what was going on and he eventually begins to open up. When Alan was a child, his mother was a Christian who read the bible to him every day. One day, his father destroyed a picture of the crucifixion of Jesus and Alan decided to replace it with a picture of a horse. Later in the play, Alan gets a job at a stable and meets Jill Mason. Jill convinces Alan to have sex with the horses because of his attraction. He did not want the horses to see the sin he was about to commit to them.


The few enjoyable moments all had one thing in common, humor. The college students incorporated their 21st century comedy into the ancient drama, in a way through which the audience members could relate. Equus is stunning. Alan begins therapy by behaving uncooperatively to the doctor and using defense mechanisms. Denial of Reality: Alan refuses to address inquisitions about the dream and his childhood, and he persistently ignores the therapist. Fantasy: Alan uses his creative imagination to live out sexual moments of ecstasy with Equus. This is also a nonproductive wish-fulfilling activity. Compensation: on the negative side, Alan beats himself and masturbates as a form of worship to Equus.


Identification: chides the Dr. Dysart because he can identify values that the doctor is missing in his personal life. He was very self reliant and was very closed off from society. He was obsessed with his appearance and his hair. The text was published in , a time of immense social upheaval, and thus, change. Libertarian views were re-emerging as a result of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movements in the US. The composer clearly values views characteristic of this time.


The text questions the morality of society, a practice common within the reactionary movement of the s. The text broadly addresses the issue of conformity. It mainly uses religion as an example of people's rely ness to conform to society. It mocks religion, belittling it with the story of Alan who so easily worships a horse in absence of a biblical figure. The text also questions the concept of "normality". The composer clearly values the need for internal social change in order to, at least, attempt to fight the ultimately pointless and furthermore, damaging life, that people of contemporary society so readily accept.


Evident in this text is Existentialist philosophy. Equus I went to the Jones Theater on campus and watched the performance, Equus a story written by Peter Shaffer. In Alan's eyes his god was Equus, a horse. Towards the end of Equus, you can see very clearly that Alan definitely held resentment against both of his parents. In Equus, Alan's father was uncomfortable with the picture of Christ over Alan's bed so to make him feel familiar he replaced it with a horse. In Equus, everybody tried to interfere with Alan and make him aware of his faults, but to Alan no faults were visible. The play "Equus," by Peter Shaffer uses a psychiatrist, Dr. Equus is not the first psychological play Shaffer has penned, but it is one of the most successful.


Freud's "Libido Theory" helps explain the sexual aspect of Alan's relationship with Equus. Now, it is Equus who is rejecting him and not allowing him to have what he wants. The danger that Alan is in if Dysart allows Equus to stay is worth the loss of passion Equus, a play by Peter Shaffer, is a twisted tale of a boy's affixation with horses as his god and the complications he deals with about sex, religion and life. Although the play is called Equus, the true meaning of the story has nothing to do with it.
